George Joseph Butler, Jr.

Veteran George Joseph Butler Jr was born to parents the late George Butler Sr and Mildred Black Butler, on May 28, 1947 in Gainesville, Georgia. He graduated from South Hall High School in 1965 and went on to study Political Science at University of North Georgia where graduated with a bachelor’s degree. He was a member of the band and played on the baseball team. After College, George began his service in the United States Army, serving in the Vietnam War. His military service spanned from 1969-1974. He served as a tank commander and captain in the artillery division. George was an honored lifetime member of the 11th Armored Cavalry Blackhorse Association. Post-Vietnam, George went on to have a career as a Probation Officer, being awarded the title of Honorary Deputy Sheriff, and after 26 years of service, he retired from the Dekalb County Department of Corrections in 1999. He enjoyed craftsmanship, building, sports, music and a good cup of coffee. He was a well-known “Waffle House regular”. George met his wife, Wanda Williams Butler, in 1990 and were soon married in 1991 in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. George and Wanda enjoyed 30 years of marriage together. During their union they were blessed with three beautiful children, Amber Butler Cook, Trevor Butler, and Kelly Butler, who he absolutely adored.

George is preceded in death by his father, George Butler Sr, mother, Mildred Black Butler, sister, Ann Butler Swansey, and nephew, Edward Swansey.

Left to cherish his memories are his wife Wanda Williams Butler, Stone Mountain, GA; three children, Amber Butler (Stephen) Cook of Clarkston, GA, Trevor Butler of Stone Mountain, GA and Kelly Butler of Stone Mountain, GA, two loving grandsons Kayden Cook and Kylen Cook, and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. He will be especially missed by his early morning, good cup of coffee and conversation friends and staff at the Waffle House.
