George Milton Jeffares, beloved husband and father, passed away on Thursday, April 5, 2018, at the age of 93. Born in Meridian, MS, he was the son of the late Robert M. Jeffares and Annie Laurie Mayatt Jeffares. He attended Mississippi State University and Georgia Institute of Technology, earning his BS degree in Chemical Engineering from MSU in 1945. He served in the U.S. Army 1945 – 1946 and married Carolyn Gentry Jeffares on June 4, 1948.
He began working at Plantation Pipeline Company in 1947 and worked as a Corrosion Engineer for Plantation for 44 years. He was a lifetime member of the National Association of Corrosion Engineers (NACE International) with a current worldwide membership of over 26,000. He served as the Southeastern Director of the organization, followed by the positions of Vice President of NACE International in 1972 and President in 1973.
He was a member of St. Mark Methodist Church, serving on the Board of Stewards and the Finance Committee. In 1973 he joined Oak Grove United Methodist Church and was a member of the Faith Class (formerly the Graydon Class) where he taught monthly for many years. He served the church as a member of the United Methodist Men, chairman of the annual Men’s BBQ for several years, Board of Stewards, Board of Trustees, five years as an Annual Conference representative, Lay Minister, Stephen Minister, and an usher.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 70 years, Carolyn Gentry Jeffares, children George Milton “Jeff” Jeffares, Jr., Sally Miller Jeffares, and Mark Llewellyn Jeffares (Janet), grandchildren Christopher Fairchild (Jamie), Patrick Fairchild (Lindsay), Sarah Fairchild Johnson (Todd), Brett Jeffares and Tyler Jeffares, great grandson Henley Fairchild, sister Rosalind Jeffares, sister-in-laws Merle Jeffares and Elynor Varner, and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at 2:00pm with a reception immediately following on Monday, April 9, 2018, at Oak Grove United Methodist Church, 1722 Oak Grove Road, Decatur, GA, 30033. Reverends Louis Miller and Mary Lou Gilbert will officiate. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to the Oak Grove United Methodist Church Building Fund. A.S.
