Flowers, George Roderick
Mr. Rod Flowers, 92, of Decatur died Friday, May 8, 2015. Mr. Flowers grew up in
Decatur, graduated from the University of Georgia and Emory University, studying
chemistry, mathematics and medicine. He retained a lifelong interest in science. He
served in the Navy during WWII as a communications officer on a tank landing ship in
the Pacific arena. After graduate studies, he worked as a chemist, a vacuum cleaner
salesman, and a mathematics lecturer at the university level before ending his career
investing in real estate. Mr. Flowers was active in the church and community. He was a
lay board member at the Decatur First United Methodist Church, as well as a teacher in
the Fellowship Sunday School class. He served on his neighborhood association board.
Mr. Flowers was married to the late Mary Jane Bishop Flowers for 58 years. He is
survived by his daughter, Teresa Metzger, of Oxford, GA and son, John Flowers, of
Gainesville, FL, as well as five grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at the
Decatur First United Methodist Chapel at 1 pm on Friday, May 15th, Dr. David Jones
officiating. Burial will follow in the Prospect Cemetery in Chamblee, GA. The family
will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, May 14th, at A.S. Turner and Sons.
