George T. Sarris, 76, of Duluth passed away Friday, February 20, 2009. He was a kind and generous man who was admired by all who knew him. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Athena, his two daughters Stacey Sapp and husband Richard Sapp, Gia Hanna and husband Jim Hanna, and grandchildren Christie and Erin Sapp and Steven and Nicholas Hanna. He was born in Tarpon Springs, FL and raised in St. Augustine, FL where he graduated from Ketterlinus High School. He graduated from the University of Florida in 1954, where he played football for the Florida Gators from 1951 to 1954. He worked for the Army Corps of Engineers for 35 years at several locations including the Kennedy Space Center, Atlanta, and two assignments in Frankfurt Germany. After retiring in 1990 he began to work full time with his own small business, Sarris Construction Company. He was an active member of the Greek Orthodox Cathedral and AHEPA. He loved to travel and play bridge, and spend time with his family. He was a lifelong student of Greek language, heritage, and religious studies. A prayer service will be held at the chapel of A. S. Turner & Sons in Decatur, on Sunday, February 22 at 7PM with the family receiving friends from 6 until 8PM. The funeral will be held at the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the Annunciation at 2500 Clairmont Road N.E. on Monday, February 23 at 11AM. Interment will follow at Floral Hills Memory Gardens. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made to the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the Annunciation Endowment Fund in Atlanta or Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in St. Augustine, FL.
