George Washington Hart

George W. Hart of Atlanta and Habersham County died Thursday, June 20, 2013. George was born in 1938 to the late Lucretia and Harold Clinton Hart of Charlotte, NC. He graduated from Harding High School and Davidson College. He served as a Lieutenant in the 101st Airborne, Ft. Campbell, KY. George attended Emory University School of Law where he was Editor-in-Chief of the Law Review. George was known in the legal community as the Bear. To his colleagues was tough as a grizzly and warm as a teddy bear. One who had suffered through one of his withering cross-examinations was said to have experienced a Hart attack. George was a mentor to many and the consummate professional. No more decent individual ever selected a jury. George married his high school sweetheart, Lynn Leary; together they embraced life, filling it with family, music, travel, the arts and gardening. They have been long-time members of Glenn Memorial United Methodist Church. He is survived by his loving family: wife, Lynn; his daughters and sons-in-law, Kathryn and Jim Merlene of Arlington, VA; Susan and John Ridley of Decatur, GA; grandchildren Nicole, Anna and John Merlene. Memorial services will be held Saturday, June 29, at 2pm in the sanctuary of Glenn Memorial United Methodist Church on the campus of Emory University. The Reverends Susan Pinson and Dr. Alice Rogers will officiate. A reception will follow in Glenn's Fellowship Hall.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Glenn Memorial United Methodist Church or to the George W. Hart Memorial Fund at alz.org.
