Gerald R. Cooper, MD, Ph.D, 94, a long time resident of Atlanta died Monday, May 25, 2009. Dr. Cooper received his A.B., M.A. and Ph.D degrees in chemistry and his M.D. from Duke University. He began working in 1952 at the Centers for Disease Control and continued with the CDC until his death. Surviving are his wife of 63 years, Lois Painter Cooper; daughter and son-in-law, Annetta Cooper Evans and Charles “Chuck” R. Evans of Chapel Hill, NC; sons and daughter-in-law, Gerald “Gerry” R. Cooper, Jr. and Charlotte Slovis Cooper, and Rodney P. Cooper, all of Atlanta; and 2 grandsons, Daniel Charles Evans and Christopher Gerald Evans. Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 29th, at 11 a.m. at Oak Grove United Methodist where the Cooper family are members. Rev. Glenn Ethridge will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the charity of your choice. Friends are invited to visit with the family from 6 until 8 p.m. on Thursday, May 28th at A. S. Turner & Sons.
