Gerald Thomas "Tommy" Couch died of a sudden heart attack Sunday, August 5, 2012. He was born in Atlanta on July 31, 1949, the son of the late Mildred and James Allen Couch. Tommy attended Decatur High School and upon graduation attended the University of Georgia having accepted their scholarship offer from among the many he received. As linebacker, he lettered '69, '70, '71 and was honored to have played in several bowl games. Immediately following graduation he began teaching and coaching high school football. He then changed career directions and until his passing was employed by Wiley|Wilson [formerly Hartrampf Engineering]. He was a faithful member of Redeemer Lutheran where he enjoyed ushering and cleaning the altar brass. Tommy leaves behind his wife Heidi [nee Beinke] sons Steve [Tricia] and Buck [Stephanie] and cherished granddaughters Mackenzie and Ashlynn and his beloved "Atlanta" granddaughter, Lilia. Additional survivors include his brothers Jimmy [Paula], Michael [Tukie], Kelly [Heather]; sisters, Becky Noell [Roger], Pat Kimmons [Jim] and Jennie Sue Roach [Roy], brothers-in-law, Tim Beinke [Bobbie] and Hans Beinke and sister-in-law Karen Richey and Janiece and Llew Paulson. Tommy also leaves behind many beloved nieces and nephews as well as great nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, 731 Peachtree Street, Atlanta, GA 30308. [Nursery provided] Visitation will be Wednesday, August 8th from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at A.S. Turner and Sons. Services will be held at 2 pm, Thursday, August 9th at the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, the Rev. Dr. Timothy Smith officiating.
