Gilbert Morgan Geurin passed away May 11, 2015 at 92. Born in Hot Springs, Arkansas, a descendant of French Hugenots, Gib was loved and respected by family, friends and colleagues. Gib had a deeply satisfying life long career as an airline pilot and instructor. In 1942, he was a Civilian Air Force flight instructor at Avenger Field in Sweetwater, Texas for The Women Air Force Service Pilots( WASPs). In 1944, he was hired as a pilot by Eastern Airlines beginning on the DC3. He piloted the DC3 that hangs in the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum. He flew for Eastern for 37 1/2 years retiring in 1982. He was one of the first instructors for the L-1011 later becoming a Check Pilot. He was the Captain for Vice President Spiro Agnew's campaign plane during the 1972 presidential race. After retirement, over a span of 25 years he served as the Treasurer, Convention Chairman , Vice President and President of the Retired Eastern Pilots Association (REPA) culminating in REPA's Hall of Fame Award in 2000. He enjoyed building homes, bush-hogging 200 acres in Blue Ridge, growing his famous tomatoes, fishing, and helping family and neighbors. His Jr. High sweetheart and beloved wife of 66 years, Dottie Belle Smith Geurin, preceded him in death in 2009. It was in his everyday open-hearted attitude which persevered through adversity and only sharpened with dementia, that he left his truest legacy. He was a kind, generous, positive, competent, man who lived with integrity, guided by a way of life that drew from his common sense and desire to do the right thing.
He is survived by his daughters, Michele Geurin Tully and Gayanne Geurin; his six grandchildren, Marnie, Kristi, Michael, Jimmy, Micah and Sarra; and six great grandchildren, Tyler, Trevor, Geurin, Gabi, Liam and Addilyn. His son, Michael, predeceased him in 1975.
