Grace Marie McFarland, 89, of Atlanta, an army wife for nearly 30 years, a mother of two children, a Red Cross Volunteer for many years and a Gold Star mother, passed away on Friday, October 15, 2010. Born in Akron, Ohio on July 12, 1921, she attended school at Ellet Elementary and High School, graduating in June 1939. She attended and graduated from the Hamel Business School in Akron, after which she was employed by the Columbia Chemical Company. Married to a fellow Ellet High School graduate, Richard D. McFarland, she began her Army life in Tyler, Texas on June 19, 1943. During World War II she worked in the Young Women's Christian Association and was a Red Cross Nurses Aide in Akron, OH. After the war she traveled with her husband to many different Army stations in America as well as overseas in Japan and Germany. Making a home wherever she traveled she volunteered in many activities – Church, Thrift Shops and was an active member of the United States Golf Association. Mrs. McFarland is preceded in death by her son, Sergeant Richard Scott McFarland; a member of the 5th Special Forces Group in Viet Nam was killed in Action on November 9, 1969 and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, VA. Her interment will be in the same cemetery. Mrs. McFarland is survived by her husband, Col. USA Ret. Richard D. McFarland; daughter, Dr. Deborah Ann McFarland, a Professor in the School of Public Health at Emory University in Atlanta, GA; sister, Betty Ruth Axline of Akron, Oh; three brothers, Eugene Axline of Hoosick Falls, NY, Charles Axline of Akron, OH, Joseph Edward Axline of San Jose, CA. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, October 20, 2010 at 4:00 p.m. in the chapel of A. S. Turner & Sons with Rev. Mary Jane Cornell officiating. Contributions of Memorials in memory of Mrs. McFarland may be made into the American Red Cross or the Gold Star Mothers of America, Washington, DC. A. S. Turner & Sons
