Greta "Patsy" Thomas, 83, of Decatur, passed away on Friday, July 22, 2011. Patsy was born in Decatur, GA, August 6, 1927, to the late Judge Frank Guess and Emily Harrison Guess. She attended Decatur Girls High and the University of Georgia for two years. In 1946, she was married to Wales Wimberly Thomas of Decatur. They had two daughters, Greer and Karna, and were married for 37 years. Patsy was a member of Decatur Presbyterian Church and the Junior League of Dekalb County. She enjoyed being a mother and grandmother, playing bridge and doing needlework until her eyesight was diminished from macular degeneration. In 1976, Patsy opened a gift and antique shop in Decatur, named The Seventeen Steps, which she later sold, but continues to this day. In 2009, Patsy moved to Clairmont Place where she made many new friends and reconnected with old friends from Decatur Girls High. Although she struggled with her sight, she was very happy at "the home" as she jokingly called it. Her cheerfulness will be greatly missed by her many friends. Patsy is predeceased in death by her parents and her sister, Frances Harrison. She is survived by her brother, John Guess, of Atlanta, GA; her daughter and son-in-law, Greer and Phil Shinall III, of Atlanta, GA: her daughter and son-in-law, Karna and Scotty Candler III, of Decatur, GA; granddaughter Wimberly McPhail, of Atlanta, GA; grandson Phillip Shinall IV, of Chicago, IL; grandson Scotty Candler IV, of Decatur, GA; granddaughter Ali Shinall, of Atlanta, GA; grandson Charlie Candler, of Decatur, GA; great-grandsons Walker and Phillip McPhail; and great-granddaughters Hampton McPhail, Emma and Molly Shinall.
