Gwen Foster Blanz, 91, of Decatur, Georgia, passed away Monday, September 12, 2022. Gwen was the oldest of two daughters, born on May 13, 1931, to Guy and Retha Foster. She spent her youth in Decatur, Georgia where she attended Decatur Girls High School and later Georgia State University. While at Decatur Girls School, she met the love of her live, Robert Langley Blanz “Lang”. The two were married on November 7, 1953 and loved each other devoutly for 63 years.
Over the course of her life, Gwen served her community as a life-long member of Decatur First Methodist Church, where she was a founder of the Knox Peabody Sunday School class and worked to put on Holy Week luncheons every year for the congregation. She was also a member of the Dekalb County Junior League.
The greatest joy of Gwen’s life was being devoted her family as a wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt. Gwen was an avid reader, fantastic cook, and loved entertaining her many friends for occasions both big and small.
Gwen is survived by her daughter, Robin Blanz Mitchell and her husband, John Green Mitchell Jr.; her son, Robert Langley Blanz Jr. “Bob” and his wife, Kim Thomason Blanz; her four grandchildren, John Green Mitchell III “Trey”, Brittany Blanz Sigg and her husband William Sigg, Robert Langley Blanz III “Buck”, and Hayden Foster Blanz; her sister, Joan Pope, and nephews, Dick Pope and his wife Bobbie Ann Pope, Jim Pope and his wife Joanna Pope as well as many grand and great-grand nieces and nephews.
A graveside memorial service will be held at Decatur Cemetery on Monday, September 19, 2022, at 11:00. Reception at Gwen’s house to follow.
