Gwendolyn Middlebrooks Jones

February 25, 1924 — May 31, 2007

Gwendolyn M. Jones died at home on Thursday morning, May the 31st, 2007 with her husband and son by her side.  She was born February 25, 1924 in Rock Mills, Alabama to William Otis and Jesse Middlebrooks.  She graduated from Handley High School and moved to Atlanta where she attended business school.  She worked as Private Secretary to the CEO of Wilkin Theatre Supply Company until 1953 when her first child was born.  She met her future husband in 1948 and they married in 1950.  Her daughter, Janet G. Jones, was born in 1953 and her son, Dennis F., Jr. in 1956 and she became a full-time mother and homemaker.  She was a member of Decatur First Baptist Church since 1951 where she served as a Sunday school teacher, worked in the church library and was a devoted member of the Joy Sunday school class.  Gwen battled Multiple Sclerosis for 40 years, never complaining and always cheerful, being active in Camp Fire girls with Janet and serving as Den mother of Cub Scouts with Dennis, Jr.  Additionally, she served as Co-president of the PTA for a term at Oak Grove Elementary School.  She was greatly interested in and encouraging to her husband in his legal career as a private attorney, Assistant District Attorney and DeKalb County Juvenile Court Judge.  She was an active member of the local Garden Club and was a voracious reader.   She is survived by her sister, Charlotte Grigsby; her brother W. O. "Bill" Middlebrooks; sister-in-laws Virginia Hanbury and Louise P. Jones; her husband, Dennis F. Jones; her son Dennis F. Jones, Jr. and numerous nieces and nephews.  A memorial service will be held at 3:00PM on Sunday, June 3rd in the chapel of Decatur First Baptist Church.  Visitation will be held from 6:00PM to 8:00PM on Saturday, June 2nd at A.S. Turner & Sons on North Decatur Road.
