Dr. Harland Daniel Austin, 62, of Smoke Rise, GA died October 10th. Harland was born in Brooklyn, NY and raised on Long Island in Bethpage. He received his B.A. and M.S. Degrees from S.U.N.Y at Stony Brook and his D.Sc. from Harvard University. Harland began his teaching career at the University of Alabama in Birmingham. In 1990, he joined The Rollins School of Public Health Department of Epidemiology at Emory University. Harland also worked as a consultant to the CDC. He is the son of the late Harland Austin and is survived by his mother, Estelle Austin of Langhorne, PA; his wife Sandra Carter of Smoke Rise, GA; his beloved daughter Kimberly Austin of Nashville, TN; his sisters, Nancy Goodwin and Jane Austin of Yardley, PA; his brother Kenneth Austin of Lehighton, PA; ten loving nieces and nephews and one grand-niece. Contributions in his memory may be made to the International Myeloma Foundation. A memorial service will be held at A. S. Turner and Sons Funeral Home, 2773 N. Decatur Rd., Decatur 30033, at 1:00 pm on Tuesday. A visitation for friends and family will be held at noon.
