Harold Mcswain Mauldin

Harold McSwain Mauldin, 91, died peacefully at his home, September 13, 2014. Harold was born May 31, 1923 to Claudia Bruce and Marvin McSwain Mauldin. He was predeceased by his siblings Mary Sue, Marvin, Cooley, Jamie, John M., Bruce, Kathleen, Bristow and Levis. Harold attended Rabun Gap Junior College, Lincoln Memorial University and the University of Georgia from which he received a BS degree in Chemistry. Harold served during World War II in the United States Army Air Corp as part of the U.S. 8th Air Force with the 401st Bombardment Group. As a Radio Operator and Navigator on B17's, he flew in 35 missions over Europe before returning home in the fall of 1945. It is then that he entered the University of Georgia where he met his wife, Charlotte, who was from Athens. They married June 30, 1949. After a brief stint with the Georgia Department of Public Health, Harold worked for almost 30 years with the United States Public Health Service retiring in 1979. At that time, he was the Deputy Director of Immunization for the Center for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, the first non-physician to hold that position. In addition to other awards, Harold received the Superior Service Award, the highest honor conferred by the U.S. Public Health Services and Mental Health Administration. For over 50 years, Harold was a devoted member of the Embry Hills United Methodist Church serving in various roles and committees with the church and with the North Georgia Conference. Up until the last few years, he volunteered regularly at the Methodist Children's Home in Decatur. Throughout his life and particularly after his retirement, Harold continued to be active with the 401st Eighth Army Air Force Bomb Group Association as well as the Historical Society of the Eighth Air Force in Atlanta. He and Charlotte attended many reunions and meetings of those groups over the years throughout the United States and overseas. Harold is survived by his wife of 65 years, Charlotte Floyd Mauldin; his children, Kathie Shepard (Steve), Harold Jr., Ken (Alley), Vernon (Joli); his grandchildren Brooke Shepard Baker (Joel), Whitney Shepard, Mallory Shepard, Melissa Mauldin, Kevin Mauldin, Chase Mauldin, Grace Mauldin, Nick Mauldin, Juliette Mauldin, Georgina Mauldin, Noelle Mauldin, Jake Mauldin; and one great-grandchild, Grant Baker. Visitation will be at A.S. Turner Funeral Home in Decatur, GA. on Tuesday, September 16th from 6:00-7:30. PM. The funeral will be held at Embry Hills United Methodist Church, Chamblee, GA. on Wednesday, September 17th at 10:30 AM, with visitation at the church for the hour preceding. Following a luncheon reception, burial will be the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, GA. at 2:30 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to either Embry Hills United Methodist Church or to the National Museum of the Mighty Eighth Air Force in Savannah, GA.
