Harriet Unfug

December 24, 1934 — January 26, 2025

Harriet Elise Treadwell Unfug died on January 26, 2025 in Decatur, GA. She was born December 24, 1934 and was raised in Ventura, California, second of four daughters of Harriet (nee Felton) and Vernon Rountree Gilbert.

Harriet married Perry Edward Treadwell in 1952 and was a devoted mother of 4 children. She was thoughtful and loving to everyone.

In the early 60's she delivered food to the less fortunate and would not support attendance at a local segregated pool. In the 1970's Harriet worked at The Chrysalis, a drug rehabilitation center for teenagers. She also helped run The Patch Inc., a community center in Cabbagetown where she impacted the lives of many. Harriet earned an associate degree from Emory University all while running a household.

Harriet played a key role in the revitalization of Little Five Points as part-owner of the Little Five Points Community Pub. She protested the proposed freeway through intown neighborhoods, and invested in the transformation of the Point Center building.

Harriet was an active member of the Atlanta Friends Meeting and involved in The Paideia School in the early 1970s.

Harriet began a long career at the BOND Community Federal Credit Union in 1988. Harriet married Douglas Unfug, after proposing to him, in 1996, with many happy years together, including many travel adventures, until his death in 2017.

Harriet was a vivacious person living life fully, from the teenage drug store soda jerk to a community builder to the matriarch of her family. Even though diminished by dementia, she never forgot her children's names.

Harriet is survived by son Gilbert Treadwell and daughters Gail Holland (Clay), Sally Treadwell and Susan Treadwell (Linda) along with granddaughters Sarah Stegall (Jeremy), Amanda Chow (Philip) and Amy Clower Pederson (Ryan), great grandchildren Rosalie and Ethan Chow and Andrew and Claire Stegall. Donations in Harriet's memory can be made to the Atlanta Friends Meeting. A memorial celebration will be held February 15 at 3:00 PM at the Atlanta Friends Meeting, 701 W Howard Ave, Decatur, GA 30030.
