Harriet Winston Mcgee

Mrs. Harriet Winton McGee, age 89, died peacefully in hospice care at Emory Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia on July 8, 2011. Harriet was born in Morrisville, Missouri on July 16, 1921, to Lanta Mae Gulick Winton and James Fielding Winton. She graduated from Central College, Fayette, Missouri, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1942, and received her Master of Arts degree in English from the University of Missouri, Columbia, Missouri, in 1947. Harriet was a homemaker for many years and an English teacher in the Dallas Independent School District in Dallas, Texas, for 15 years. She also was a gifted pianist and soprano and sang with the Dallas Symphony Chorus. Harriet was married for over sixty years to Reverend John W. (Jack) McGee, who died in 2007 in Atlanta, Georgia. Together, they served for over thirty years in the North Texas Conference of the United Methodist Church. Over the years, Harriet served the congregations' music programs as organist, choir director, and frequent soloist on Sunday mornings. For the last seventeen years, Harriet has resided in Atlanta, Georgia. She is survived by daughter Marcia McGee Perkins, Charlottesville, Virginia, son John Willis McGee, Jr. and daughter-in-law Kathy McGee, Austin, Texas, daughter Melanie McGee Platt and son-in-law J. McDowell Platt, Atlanta, Georgia; grandchildren Meredith McGee, Matthew Davenport, Caitlin McGee, Bo Platt and Jake Platt; and great-grandchildren Eden Eckstrom and Lucy Clauss. A private memorial service for immediate family members will be held at Glenn Memorial United Methodist Church, Atlanta, Georgia, on Friday, July 15, 2011. The Reverend Donn Ann Hall Weber will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Glenn Memorial United Methodist Church, 1660 N. Decatur Road, Atlanta, Georgia 30307 or Arbor Terrace of Decatur, Harriet W. McGee memorial, 425 Winn Way, Decatur, Georgia 30030.
