Harriett Mildred (Mickey) Acree Bowers

Mrs. Harriet Mildred "Mickey" Acree Bowers, age 86, of Decatur, died Tuesday, February 15, 2005, peacefully after a long illness. She was born on December 30, 1918, the daughter of Leila Mamie Meeks Acree and William Ernest Acree of Atlanta. She is also predeceased by her first husband, Wilfred Augustus Gough Stalker on April 15, 1937; and her sister, Helen Louise Acree Kramer on April 8, 1986. She attended Joe E. Brown Junior High and Atlanta Girls High. One daughter was born of the first marriage, Helen Marie Stalker, now Helen Bowers Ogren of Woodstock, GA, her daughter, Colleen Gregg, and fiancÚ, Ian Miller live in Melbourne, Australia. Her second marriage, to Robert Bruce Bowers, produced two daughters, Judith Elaine Bowers Richardson (Mrs. Curtis R.), and Barbara Lynn Bowers. The Richardson's children and grandchildren are, Susan Richardson Keyes and Mike Moore, parents of Jenson Keyes, Candice Keyes Perry and husband, Ben, and Lacie Moore, Clayton Richardson and his wife, Leslie, and their sons, Ryan and Brett. Barbara's son, Nicholas "Nick" Powell and wife, Terri live in Summerville, SC. Mrs. Bowers volunteered many hours in her church and community. She tested children's eyes with the Red Cross. She helped keep the nursery and helped with other children's programs at the First Baptist Church of Decatur, where she also sang in the choir. She later joined the Decatur Heights Baptist Church. She also enjoyed singing with the Decatur Choral Club. She was a committee chairperson for the AARP Decaturite Chapter, and enjoyed exercising with the Supersteppers. In later years she helped take Beverly Manor Nursing home residents on field trips, and took her little dog, Poco, there to visit. She worked as a salesperson and artist/craftsman with Patty-Cakes, a key punch operator for McConnell's, and a rate clerk for Southern Railway for 14 years. She contributed to many charities, especially those involving children or God's creatures. She proudly displayed pictures of several children, she had sponsored from Kenya and Brazil through the Christian Children's Fund. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, February 19th in the chapel of A. S. Turner & Sons with Dr. Frank H. Crumpler officiating. Interment will follow at Westview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, a local animal shelter, or a favorite charity. The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Friday at A. S. Turner & Sons.
