Harry Paul Tuggle, Jr.

April 25, 1926 — December 18, 2018

1926 - 2018

Harry Paul (Paul) Tuggle, Jr., beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, passed away on December 18. He was born on April 25, 1926 to his late parents, Harry Paul Tuggle, Sr. and Eva Kennamer Tuggle of Birmingham, Alabama. Paul grew up in Birmingham, served in the Merchant Marines and the U.S. Army during World War II, and received an Architectural Degree from Auburn University. In 1947, he met his lifelong love, Harriet (Curl) Tuggle, to whom he was married for 69 years, the last 44 living in Atlanta until she passed away on June 2. An Auburn Tiger to the end, he enjoyed Auburn football at every opportunity.

Although a gifted football and basketball player, Paul chose to pursue education and a career in architecture. He practiced architecture at H. Paul Tuggle and Associates in Huntsville, Alabama and Atlanta, Georgia, including as principal architect for the state of Georgia, for more than 50 years. He designed 99 churches and numerous commercial office buildings over the years, and was a mentor and inspiration to others. He was a dedicated member of Oak Grove United Methodist Church. He was the rock of our family; he was committed first and foremost to Harriet, to her music and family, and to being a part of their lives; his dedication to his family was an inspiration.

Paul is survived by his two children, Leigh Tuggle Olivar (Harry) of San Marino, California and Paul Kennamer Tuggle (Jennifer) of Athens, Georgia; his six grandchildren, Robert Patterson Jackson IV, David Harris Jackson, Katherine Grace Tuggle, and Jordan, David, and Harry Olivar III; his sister, Betty (Tuggle) Buikema; and her two children, Michael O’Dell and Paula O’Dell.

A Memorial Service in celebration of Paul's life will be held on Saturday, January 5, 2019 at 2:00 p.m., at Oak Grove United Methodist Church, 1722 Oak Grove Road, Decatur, Georgia. Following the service will be a reception where family and friends will receive guests.
