Hattie Lois Townsend

November 8, 1924 — February 9, 2014

Lois Powell Townsend was born in Corydon, Kentucky November 8, 1924 to Ruby Faulkner Powell and Samuel Ray Powell. Lois passed away peacefully Sunday morning February 9, 2014. She was one of eleven children and grew up on her family's farm. She had an affinity for and loved animals all her life and was in her element taking care of the farm animals especially the chickens and cows. She would rescue the ostracized featherless chicks, keep them in a box on the back porch, and dressed them in doll clothes until they grew feathers and could be reunited with the flock. She was married to the late Roy L. Townsend of Dixon, Kentucky. They married in Chicago and moved to Atlanta in 1951. Lois attended Murray State Teacher's College in western Kentucky. Lois worked for the Federal Government in the FBI, IRS, and for the Environmental Protection Agency from its inception. She retired as the Personal Secretary and Assistant to the Regional Administrator of the EPA in Atlanta GA. She received numerous awards for her dedication and work at the EPA. Lois was a long time active member of Druid Hills United Methodist Church of Atlanta and Ousley Methodist Church before that. She was an excellent baker and her flakey pie crusts were legendary amongst her family and friends. Her crochet and needlework pieces are works of art. In later years she was a performer with the Funsters dance group and the Strawberry Cloggers both of which were popular and in constant demand for their performances. The Funsters were even invited to perform throughout Germany. She is survived by her sisters and brothers, Lydia O'Nan of Atlanta GA, Mary Virginia Fridy of Onton KY, Roy Powell of Poole KY, and Tommy Powell of Henderson Ky. She is also survived by 15 nieces and nephews and their numerous children and grandchildren. Memorial services will be held in Henderson, Kentucky at Rudy-Rowland Funeral Home with details to be announced. Visitation will be held Tuesday February 11th from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm at A.S.
