Hazel Summerlin Shackelford

July 29, 1928 — October 9, 2015

Hazel Summerlin Shackelford passed away peacefully at home on Friday October 9 of natural causes. She is survived by her two sons, James and Gregory Presmanes, their wives, Leisa and Willa, and their two daughters, Emily and Alison. She is also survived by her last remaining sister, Wylene Roan. Hazel was born in 1928 in Kirkland, Georgia, one of eight children. In 1945, at the age of seventeen, she graduated from high school and moved on her own to Atlanta to attend Southern Business School where she learned bookkeeping. She later married, became a homemaker and raised two sons. Hazel was active in the lives of her children always supporting them in sports, music, and scouting. She was active in the PTA at Grady High School and served as the President of the Morningside Elementary School PTA during the early 1960s. In 1974 Hazel moved with her husband to Roanoke, Virginia. In Roanoke, she started her own exercise studio and built it into a successful, independent business while also serving as a dedicated volunteer in both local and national politics. She loved her little Pug, Marco, dearly. In early 2014, Hazel moved back home to Atlanta to be closer to her family. She was lovingly cared for by Phara Barret and Elaine Carter. But he knoweth the way that I take; When he hath tried me, I shall come forth as gold. A. S. Turner & Sons
