Hazel Alletha Thomas, age 88, of Atlanta, passed away peacefully on July 2, 2009 in the presence of family. Born on October 24, 1920 in Alamo, Georgia Hazel was the eldest child of James H. Thomas and Lillie Perdue Thomas. She moved with her family to Decatur, Georgia and graduated from Decatur Girls High. She later attended Georgia State College for Women and Georgia State University. During World War II, she served her country in the U. S. Army, Women's Army Corps and throughout her life was a proud supporter of the Armed Forces. She had a diversified career and retired from the State of Georgia. Hazel was active in the community and was a life long supporter of the USO and the Decatur Civic Chorus. She was an avid college sports fan and long time Atlanta Braves fan. Hazel is survived by a sister, Lucy Thomas Patrick of Lexington, KY, a brother H. Hodgson Thomas (Dawn) of Atlanta, GA, a niece Cathryn Patrick Fryman (Jeff) of Versailles, KY, nephews Gerald T. Patrick of Lexington, KY, William H. Thomas (Mitzi) of Jacksonville Beach, FL, David J. Thomas of Atlanta, GA, Robert B. Thomas (Debbie) of Stone Mountain, GA, Stanley M. Thomas (Robin) of Los Angeles, CA, LTC Steven G. Thomas (Bethany) of Woodstock GA and ten great nephews. Family will receive friends between 1:00 and 2:30 on Saturday July 4, 2009 at A. S. Turner & Sons Funeral Home. Graveside services will be conducted at Decatur Cemetery immediately following the visitation. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to the USO or the Decatur Civic Chorus.
