Helen Brown Hemphill

Proper Southern lady is how Helen Brown Hemphill will be remembered by most all of her family and friends. Helen was born on August 25, 1927 in Franklin County, GA to Tilman Emmett Brown and Eva Moore Brown. She grew up with her two brothers in the small town of Carnesville, GA and attended Cross Roads Baptist Church. She graduated from Franklin County High School (voted prettiest in her class her senior year) and reunited with classmate Henry Jackson Hemphill, Jr. when he returned from serving in World War II. They were married on September 7, 1946. Both applied for and were accepted for employment at the General Motors Assembly Division plant in Doraville, GA, which brought them to the North Atlanta area.
After leaving General Motors to have her only child, daughter Sandra Diane, she worked for a short time as a legal secretary. The remainder of her career was spent as an executive secretary at National Data Corporation working for George Thorpe, who started the company. She worked there from its beginning until the founder retired (approx. 16 years). Part of her responsibilities were providing food for executive and stockholder meetings. Being a wonderful southern cook, instead of having food brought in, she prepared the food for these meetings. It was enjoyed so much that when they moved to their new building, her office came complete with a kitchen so that she would continue those fabulous meals.
After retirement, Helen and Henry enjoyed lake visits to their Lake Lanier cabin and relaxing trips to the beach in the Destin, FL area. She was always available to help their only daughter with whatever was her "crisis of the day." Helen also spent much of her time in retirement years visiting with and caring for aging family members. Immediate and extended family were ALWAYS her priority.
Helen was a devout Christian, and she and Henry were among the first members of Briarcliff Baptist Church in North Atlanta.
After several years of fighting Alzheimer's, and in 2015 several strokes due to A-fib, the angels came to take Helen to her Lord on May 15, 2016. She is now thankfully no longer suffering and is reunited with the love of her life. She was preceded in death by her parents, Emmett and Eva - her brothers Fred Brown and George Brown, and a sister who died in infancy. She is survived by her daughter, Diane Eisner (husband Alan), step grandchildren Nathan Eisner (wife Katherine) and Alana Eisner – and cousins, nieces and nephews – all who will greatly miss her southern charm and sense of humor.
The family will receive friends and extended family on Friday, May 20, 2016 from 10:30-11:30 AM at A. S. Turner & Sons Funeral Home, 2773 North Decatur Road, Decatur, GA 30033. The funeral service will be held following visitation at A. S. Turner & Sons chapel with interment immediately following at White Chapel Memorial Gardens in Duluth, GA. Anyone who wishes to make a donation in lieu of flowers can honor her name in any Alzheimer's research organization.
