She grew up in Annville, Kentucky, where her parents were missionaries in the Appalachia region. Jo attended Hope College in Holland, Michigan, where she met Herman Naberhuis to who she was married for 56 years. Jo was a devout Christian and a loyal member of DePauw United Methodisst Church in New Albany, Indiana, and First Reformed Church of Wichert in St. Anne, Illinois. She was always kind, loving, patient, and wise.
