October 28, 1926 — July 18, 2008

Henry F. (Slim) Ellington of Decatur passed away Friday, July 18, 2008. He was born October 28, 1926 in Forest Park, Georgia. He attended Forest ParkHigh School, after which time he joined the Army. He served as Staff Sergeant from 1943 to 1945 in the South Pacific. After returning home he went to work as an apprentice as a member of I.B.E.W. Local 613 in 1946. He worked for Metro Electric, O.V. Scott in Augusta, GA at the Dupont’s Savannah River Plant. While living in Augusta he married Helen Wyckoff of Atlanta. They have two children, Carolyn and Allen. They have two grandsons, Kyle and Michael Bly. After returning to Atlanta he went to work for P. A. Wright at the HurtBuilding and Western Electric. Because he was tall and thin Mr. Wright began calling him SLIM. This name has stuck with him throughout his career and his private life. He did electrical work on 52 Gulf Service Stations in the Atlanta area. He also worked for Fischbach and Moore on the Marriott Hotel, the PresbyterianCenter, and the Coca Cola Company on the South Expressway. Slim worked as a Union Steward on several jobs around Atlanta. He was elected to the Executive Board for 5 terms. He was appointed to the examining Board for 3 terms. He also served as Executive Vice President of the Georgia State AFL-CIO. Slim ran for and was elected to the position of Financial Secretary. He served in this capacity until he retired in 1986. He was a member of the Forest Park Masonic Lodge #399 and the YaarabTemple. He has always been an active church member. He was a member of Briarlake Baptist for many years and most recently a member of OakGroveMethodistChurch. After retirement Slim and Helen traveled across the United States and Canada. They have visited all states except Alaska and Hawaii. After health problems prevented more travel he kept active at home in his workshop and spending time with his children and grandchildren. One thing is for certain, Slim has never met a stranger, nor has he ever met a lady who didn’t give him a birthday kiss. Mr. Ellington is survived by his wife of 57 years, Helen Wyckoff Ellington; son, Allen Ellington of Decatur, GA; daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn and Alan Bly of Hendersonville, NC; grandsons, Kyle and Michael Bly; sister and brother-in-law, Lettie and Raymond Johnson; and brother and sister-in-law, James and Mary Ellington, all of McDonough, GA. Graveside services will be held Monday, July 21 at 11:00 A.M. at Floral Hills Memory Gardens with Dr. Dan H. Rice officiating. Those desiring may send contributions to Oak Grove United Methodist Church Build Fund, 1722 Oak Grove Rd., Decatur, GA30033. The family will receive friends from 2:00 to 5:00 P.M. Sunday at A. S. Turner & Sons.
