Henry McDowell of Decatur, Georgia, passed away Monday, April 14, 2014. He was born in Philadelphia, PA, in 1931 to James and Jane McDowell. Thus began his own special way of living and doing things. His Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from Westminster Choir College, Princeton, NJ. equipped and launched him into 51 years of creative ministry through music and drama.. As Director of Music for the Methodist Children's Home in Waco, Texas, Johnson Memorial UMC in Huntington, WV and 32 years at Decatur First UMC in Decatur, GA, he put to use his energetic ideas and creativity. The American Guild of Organists, Huntington Musical Arts Guild and Atlanta Chapter of Choristers Guild were his professional outreach activities. Multiple choirs, countless drama productions, the touring Waco Special Choir, the Huntington and Decatur Summer Players are testimony to his gifts and calling. In partnership with Carolyn, his wife of over 60 years, he has left a legacy and a witness. Soli Deo Gloria! He is survived by his wife, Carolyn; four children: Kevin McDowell - wife, Suzanne Duplantis, children Mei-Mei and Lily; Bryan McDowell - wife Sherry, children Mark and Scott, wife Kelsey; Debra Hubbard - children Hannah, Grace and Jake; Shari McDowell and Karen McGrath. Visitation is scheduled at A. S. Turner Funeral Home on Tuesday, April 22 from 5:30 to 7:30 PM. A Service of Remembrance will be held Wednesday, April 23 at 2:00 P.M., in the sanctuary of Decatur First UMC, Decatur, GA, interment in their Memory Garden. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Music Ministry of Decatur First UMC or The Methodist Children's Home, Waco, Texas.
