Herbert A. Mullenix

Mr. Herbert Alton Mullenix, 86, a loving husband, father and grandfather, died at his home Monday, June 27, 2005. He was born April 2, 1919 in Elbert Co., GA and grew up on a country farm with his parents and brothers. He married his high school sweetheart, Mary Agnes Norman, and they celebrated their 60th anniversary December 2000. He attended Young Harris, ABAC College and Monroe A & M studying forestry and land surveying. He served his country during World War II in the Navy on the destroyer escort USS Micka. He came on board as a seaman second class and left two and a half years later as a boatswains mate first class. In 1939 he began his business career in the construction industry. In 1941 he went to work for North Brothers Company and spent 34 years as President and Chairman of the Board. Under his leadership, North Brothers became one of the top companies in America in its field. He was president of National Insulation Contractors Association 1977, President of SEICA 1962 (Southeastern Insulation Contractors Association), honorary member of Engineering Dept. of E. I. Dupont Co., 1988 and Midsouth Business Roundtable - Honorary Life Membership 1989. He served on the Board of National Service Industries. Herbert was active in the United Methodist Church during his lifetime. He served as Chairman of the Administrative Board of his local church, North Decatur United Methodist Church, and also as Chairman of the Trustees. His service to his church extended to serving as Chairman of the Trustees of the Atlanta-Decatur-Oxford district. He was a member of the Reese-Griffin Sunday School Class. He also supported and attended Concord United Methodist Church in Elberton, GA and Bold Springs United Methodist Church in Bold Springs, GA. Mr. Herbert Mullenix was extremely active in his community. He served for twenty years on the Board of Directors of Reinhardt College. He and his wife established a Reinhardt College Scholarship Fund for local and foreign students. He received an honorary degree from Reinhardt College in 1976. For many years, he served as Chairman of the Board of the Felton-Williams Mission, Chairman of the Board of Simpsonwood Conference and Retreat Center, served on the Board of the Atlanta Hospitality House, and supported M.D. Anderson Cancer Hospital. Herbert, along with his wife, was an avid golfer. He never missed a Master's Tournament and was a member of Druid Hills Golf and Country Club. He enjoyed his beloved lake property in Bold Spring, GA where he relaxed with his family, raised cows, fished and tended the land. He will be remembered for his great love of family and friends, his philanthropy, inspiration to others, kindness, humor and love of life. In his business and daily life he believed in "full measure". Luke 6:38 "give and it will be given to you, good measure, running over, they will pour into your lap. For by your standard of measure it will be measured to you in return." Mr. Mullenix was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. & Mrs. J. S. Mullenix; his wife Mary N. Mullenix; sons, Philip N. Mullenix, and Herbert Michael Mullenix. Survivors include daughters, Elizabeth Carole Mullenix, Doranne Mullenix Lane; grandchildren, Buddy Brantley, Kevin Brantley, Micha Lane, Kelsey Lane; great grandchild, Miles Brantley; son-in-law, William C. Lane; daughter-in-law, Andrea Brantley; brothers, Charles Mullenix, Ralph Mullenix, Walt Mullenix and their wives; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held today at 11 a.m. at North Decatur United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Concord Methodist Church cemetery at 3:30 p.m. in Elberton, GA. A. S. Turner & Sons
