Mr. Herbert Lester (H.L.) Black, Jr. died December 4, 2004 at Wesley Woods Hospital. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Cox Black. H. L., as he was known to his friends and family, was born December 17, 1917 in Cartersville, GA. He moved to Atlanta at an early age, attended Atlanta Public Schools and graduated from Boy's High School. After spending four years in the Army Air Force during World War II, he graduated from Woodrow Wilson Law School. H. L. started with Georgia Power Company in 1937 and was involved with many large projects from the 1940's to the 1980's. He was involved in the design and conversion of street cars to trackless trolleys and represented the power company in the building of the expressway system and such notable buildings as the Merchandise Mart and Lenox Square. At the time of his retirement, he was coordinating the cost accounting between Georgia Power and Marta. He retired in 1982 after forty-four years of service. H. L. was a member of Briarlake Baptist Church, the Business Men's Bible Class and the Georgia Power Company's Ambassadors Club. He is survived by his daughter, Jane Black Buckler; son-in-law, Bobby Buckler; and granddaughters, Leslie, Katie and Blair Buckler; nephew, Mike Black; and niece, Cheree Black Gayre. Services will be held at Briarlake Baptist Church in the Harris chapel at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 7th. Visitation will be at A. S. Turner & Sons in Decatur from 6-8 p.m. Monday, December 6th.
