Hubert Alois "Jan" "H.A." Janicek, 90, passed away on March 10, 2016 in Atlanta, GA. Jan was born in Cameron, Texas to Hubert Alois and Klara Mikeska Janicek.
Jan grew up in Temple, Texas with his sister Anna and brother Johnny. He graduated from Temple High School in Temple, Texas in 1942. Jan attended Rice University in Houston, Texas where he received a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering in 1945. In 1959 Jan received his Masters in Industrial Management at Georgia Tech.
Jan joined the Navy when he was 18 and served as an Ensign in Japan from February through August 1946. He also served in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba from 1952-1954 during the Korean War.
In 1947 Jan began working for The Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company as an engineer in California and was later transferred to Akron, Ohio.
On June 17, 1950, Jan married Helen Sandoli in Akron, Ohio. Helen and Jan moved to Atlanta, Georgia shortly thereafter, had 6 daughters, and started their own company called Jan Engineering in 1969.
Jan was an avid dancer. He met Helen at a church dance, took tap dance lessons in his 80s, and attended monthly dances with Helen until he was 86. Jan was an amateur photographer and always had his Rolleiflex camera with him. He was an inventor, entrepreneur, devout Catholic,
golf enthusiast, and loved socializing with his friends and family.
Jan is survived by his spouse Helen, their six daughters, four grandchildren, and four
great-grandchildren.
Jan is also survived by his sister Anna and her husband John and several nieces and nephews.
Jan was preceded in death by his parents Hubert Alois and Klara Mikeska Janicek and his brother Johnny Janicek.
Jan's family would like to thank all the family, friends, and caregivers, including those at The Fountainview Center and Crossroads Hospice, who enriched his life by their support, advocacy, and care.
Arrangements for Jan's service will be held by A. S. Turner and Sons, Decatur, GA 30033.
