He was born on February 27, 1945 in Blakely, Georgia to Allene Newberry Eley and Hubert Wayne Eley, Sr. He attended grammar school in Attapulgus, Georgia and Decatur, Georgia at Knollwood Elementary School before graduating from Avondale High School as the star student in 1963. While at Avondale, he was drum major for the Avondale marching band who won the Virginia Beach band competition. While in high school, he developed what would be a life-long love of music, mastering the piano, French horn, and organ. He attended Yale University (Pierson College) concentrating in American Studies. He was a member of the a capella group, The Society of Orpheus and Bacchus and a member of the Yale flying and sailing clubs. He developed a passion for book conservation under the tutelage of Jane Greenfield, eventually practicing as a conservator at the New York Public Library and in his own conservation company in New York City. He returned to New Haven and worked in the restaurant industry where he served as the general manager of Atticus Bookstore/Café. Subsequently he participated in the creation of MicroPatent, an early CD-Rom publishing company. Wayne was a spirited conversationalist, a voracious reader and learner. He loved to consider meals well in advance, meticulously prepare them, and then consume them languorously amidst lively conversation. He was an avid participant in online political and aviation communities, and possessed a rich interest in horticulture, landscaping, and all things green. In his retirement, he created Beloved Disciple Press, a niche publishing company specializing in gay and lesbian spirituality. He is survived by his sisters and brother, Jane Kay (husband Rick), Ann Randolph (husband Harry), Dot Poss, and Bill Eley (wife Mary Haley); his nieces and nephews, Michael, Melanie, Jennifer, Lance, Taylor, Whitney, Caitlin and Nolan. He was fortunate to have many dear friends, including Ruth Sprague, Brooks Shephard, Gene Sterling, Jane and Arthur Greenfield, and Roy and Mae Brown. Until his very last day, he greatly enjoyed his current friends at Evans Fine Foods and the Condominiums of Avondale Estates and Scott Isebrand, of New York City.
