Imogene Maxey Obituary

Imogene Maxey of Decatur, Georgia, born November 21, 1927, entered eternal life on April 2, 2024.

Imogene was the daughter of Una Mae and Lewis Rutledge from La Fayette Georgia. As a late teen she moved to Rome Georgia with her family. She worked at Rome's, then popular, Fahy department store on Broad Street. In Rome she was introduced by mutual friends to her future husband Herschel Maxey. The couple were married in her parent's parlor and moved to Decatur GA, where they built a home. Herschel designed the residence himself with Imogene's wishes in mind. They lived in this home for over 60 years, raising 2 sons Greg and David. She was a loving, caring mother and wife, always present and giving of her time and encouragement.

Imogene was the family homemaker creating a congenial and loving home. Her house was often adorned with seasonal decorations made by her own hand. She loved her outdoor patio bordered by flower beds she kept lush with blooming flowers. Herschel and Imogene were members of the First Christian Church of Decatur and active in the Keystone Sunday class. She also was active in the church's Women's Fellowship, circle group along with Fun and Travel Club. Imogene relished attending the church's choir and music programs which always lifted her spirit. Herschel and Imogene enjoyed a beautiful marriage raising their two sons and staying active with the Dancing Squares group. Upon retirement the couple traveled the world on adventurous cruises. Having grandchildren was a great blessing to Imogene, she would spend hours playing with them, often using vintage toys and games saved from her sons' childhood.

She is survived by her son Greg Maxey and his wife Daria and her son David Maxey. Imogene has 4 grandchildren, Andrew (Christy) Maxey, Tyler (Lindsay) Maxey, Brooks Buckner and Duffy Buckner, in addition to her seven great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband Herschel Maxey, and a daughter-in-law, Sharon Maxey.

Visitation will be at A. S. Turner and Sons of Decatur at 1:00 Wednesday April 10th followed at 2:00 by a service in the A. S. Turner Chapel. Friends and family are welcome. Interment will be at Floral Hills Memory Gardens in Tucker GA.
