Isla Allen King

Mrs. Isla Allen King, 94, died July 28, 2009 at Emory University Hospital after a short illness. She was born March 9, 1915 in Stone Mountain, Georgia to Early and Lucy Allen. She was preceded in death by her husband, Parks Howard King, after 62 years of marriage, her son, Fred "Freddy" Parks King, and a daughter Judith "Judy" Gwendolyn King. She is survived by her daughter, Marilyn King Crowe, a sister, Evelyn Allen Jones, a daughter-in- law, Carole Harbin King, six grandchildren, Allen Crowe of Studio City, California, Kim Crowe of Stone Mountain, GA, Kate M. King and her partner Cynthia of Phoenix, AZ, Parks King and his wife, Janie of Greenville, SC, Gina Siler Simpson and her husband Dale of Winder, GA, Steven Siler and his wife, Lindsay of Friday Harbor, WA;  and seven great grandchildren., She is also survived by two sisters-in-law, Mrs. William 'Bill" King (Francis), and Mrs. Fred King (Mary Alice) and numerous nieces and nephews.  Mrs. King graduated from Stone Mountain High School in 1932, and then attended Georgia State College for Women. After working at an insurance company, she began a long 31 year career of teaching at Stone Mountain Elementary school. Mrs. King taught two of her three children, and four of her six grand children and several nieces, nephews and cousins. While teaching, she continued her education, and completed her Bachelors Degree from Oglethorpe University. She loved her students, and continued to serve as a substitute teacher for several years after her retirement in 1977. She was awarded an Outstanding Teacher award by the Walter Ogletree VFW Post 5257 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. She served as chaperone on numerous school trips, keeping countless students from getting in trouble. She was a lifelong member of the First Baptist church of Stone Mountain, and a member of the Joy Sunday School Class. She was a member and past Worthy Matron of Stone Mountain Chapter #205 of the Order of the Eastern Star. Some of her favorite activities were fishing, especially when the “reds” were running and baseball, when the Atlanta Braves were playing.  While visiting her grandson in California, she was selected to be a contestant on the Price Is Right and won a Grandfather clock.  She loved her children and grandchildren and even had the courage to take them on a trip to Europe.  Funeral services will be held at the First Baptist Church of Stone Mountain on Friday, July 31, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. with the remains being placed in state at 10:00 a.m.  Serving as honorary escort will be the Joy Sunday School class, St. Mountain Chapter #205 of the Order of the Eastern Star and all former students. Interment, Melwood Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the First Baptist Church of Stone Mountain, 5306 Mimosa Dr., Stone Mountain, GA 30083.  The family will receive friends and relatives on Thursday, July 30, 2009 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at A. S. Turner & Sons Funeral Home, Decatur, GA.
