Decatur native Jack Douglas Hunter Jr., 76, passed away on Thursday, October 30th at Emory Hospital. Jack lived most of his life in the Decatur area, graduating from Decatur High School and then Georgia State University with a degree in chemistry. He worked at Lockheed for many years until his retirement. Jack was one of the youngest scouts ever to attain the rank of Eagle in Decatur's Troop 175 and he returned to that same Troop in the mid-70s to serve as its scoutmaster. He proudly saw his son, Jack Douglas Hunter, III also attain the Eagle rank. Even more than scouting, though, Jack was a passionate outdoorsman. He hunted and fished from Alaska to the Florida Keys; there are not many who could claim to love being out in nature more. He also taught himself to be a great game chef and enjoyed putting out a spread complete with home grown vegetables and homemade pies. Jack was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. and Mrs. Jack D. Hunter, his brother, Dr. Stephen C. Hunter, and his son, Jack Douglas Hunter, III. He is survived by his wife, MaryAnna Hunter, his daughter, Eloise Kirk and his brother Dr. Chris D. Hunter and his wife Bonnie. Also surviving are his sister-in-law, Melinda Hunter, grandchildren Christopher and Ansley Hunter, Taylor Howard and Nick Thompson, nephews Neil and Dan Hunter and cousin, Patricia Summerville. In lieu of flowers the family asks to please send contributions to the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of America or a charity of your choice. A memorial service is scheduled for 11:00 am Friday, November 21st in the chapel of A. S. Turner & Sons with visitation one hour prior to the services.
