Jack E. Morgan, Sr.

Jack E. Morgan, Sr. was born to Ethel Morgan and John Irby Morgan on January 19, 1925, in Detroit, Michigan. He passed away on Monday, December 6, 2011. Jack's early life was spent in Detroit where his fond memories included the fitness metals he won in grade school and his music appreciation that began when he learned to play the French horn. His love of music continued at Redford High School in the orchestra and marching band. It was also in these early years that he had his first exposure to industrial arts in shop classes in grade school and high School. Jack's military career during World War II began right out of high school. He joined the U. S. Army Air Corp, achieved the rank of Flight Officer and was trained as a bombardier, navigator and aerial gunner in B-29's. This introduction to flying gave him a love of flying that resulted in his later becoming a private pilot. At Asbury College in Kentucky, he met "the love of his life", Audrey Bailey. After 61 years of marriage, he still expressed gratitude daily for the beautiful life they shared together. An aptitude for things mechanical led him to attending Georgia Tech where he received a BS degree in Mechanical Engineering. Jack was very proud to be called "A Rambling Wreck from Georgia Tech And a 'helluva Engineer." Initially employed as an engine design engineer by Detroit Diesel in Detroit, "a call of a lifetime" led him to Atlanta to become Vice President and Chief Engineer for Our-Way, Inc., a remanufacturer of Air Conditioning and Refrigeration compressors in Tucker, Ga. Jack was instrumental in the design and development of all of the manufacturing tooling and equipment. He was highly respected in the industry for his knowledge and help in solving customer application problems. Jack's love for and pride in his family was legendary. His greatest joy was being with family and friends. His sons and grandchildren cherish countless happy memories with him. He shared his love of flying with his son, Gene, who was his young co-pilot. He passed on his mechanical skills to his son, Bob. He enjoyed scuba diving and NASCAR racing with both sons. He loved teaching water skiing to the children who came to the family lake house. Jack combined his love of travel with special time with the grandchildren, taking them on many trips to Europe. Survivors include his wife, Audrey Bailey Morgan, sons and daughter-in-laws, Jack E. Morgan, Jr. and Janna D. Morgan, Stone Mountain, Ga; Robert E. Morgan and Rechil Morgan, Ellijay, Ga.; grandchildren, Kimberly Morgan Shartar of Washington, D. C.; Jack Allen Morgan, Ann Arbor, Michigan; and Thomas R. Morgan, Ellijay, Ga., sisters, Harriett Wheaton, Boulder, Colo. and Jessie Sult, Winter Haven, FL., sisters-in-law, Dr. Bobbie Bailey, Atlanta, Ga. Ann Piper, Gainesville, Ga, and brother-in-law, Floyd Bailey, Lilburn, GA, and a host of nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be held Sunday, December 11, 2011 at 2:00 P.M. in the chapel of A. S. Turner & Sons. Contributions in memory of Jack Morgan can be made to DeKalb Medical Foundation, Audrey and Jack Morgan Scholarship Fund, 2701 North Decatur Road, Decatur, Georgia 30033. The family will receive friends 1:00 P.M. to 2:00 P.M. Sunday at A. S. Turner & Sons.
