Jack Emerson Matthews, of Tucker and Winder Georgia died on Saturday, October 20, 2018 at Sunrise Assisted Living in Snellville. He was 90. Mr. Matthews was a native of Decatur Georgia and the sole owner and proprietor of Matthews Supermarket in Tucker. After his service in the Navy during WW II, in 1948 he opened his business on Main Street where it became a destination point for grocery shoppers in Tucker and North DeKalb County. Matthews Supermarket was an affiliate of Associated Grocers of America and was well known for its fresh vegetables and extensive cuts of meat. Mr. Matthews made daily trips to the State Farmers Market to insure the quality of his produce. In later years he was joined by three of his children and continued the family operation at a new and expanded store on Lawrenceville Highway in Tucker. Mr. Matthews ran and managed the business until his retirement in 1997 when he moved from Tucker to the family farm in Winder. Mr. Matthews and his wife of 60 years, Virginia, spent many enjoyable years together at the farm where he grew his vegetable garden, award-winning hay and raised cattle. His favorite of all his livestock was an enormous bull named Red. Jack Matthews was a man of fine and upright character. He was devoted to his family and always expressed genuine good will to his friends and to his customers. He will be remembered as a man of his word and his constancy and loyalty to his work associates and to his employees. Mr. Matthews was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas R. Matthews and Beatrice Wages Matthews of Decatur, and his wife Virginia Acree Matthews, and son, Mark Matthews. He is survived by his three children, Linda Matthews-Murray of Tucker, Thomas Steven Matthews and his wife Susan of Winder and Richard Emerson Matthews and his wife Angela of Winder. Also, grandsons Christopher Griffith and his wife Lindsay of Atlanta, Cody Griffith of Tucker, Brian Steven Matthews and husband Dr. Luke Shouse of Decatur and Michael Thomas Matthews and wife Jonell of Gainesville. Visitation will be Thursday, October25 from 5:00 Pm until 8:00 PM at A S Turners and Sons. The funeral service will be at Turners chapel on Friday, October 26 at 1:00 PM. Interment will follow at Floral Hills Memorial Gardens.
