James Edward Helms, Jr. (Jimmy) of Decatur passed away Tuesday, June 21, 2016 at the age of 84. He grew up in East Atlanta and spent the rest of his life in DeKalb and Walton County. Jimmy began his professional career in DeKalb County as a police officer, transferred to the Probation Department, followed by becoming appointed as administrator for the Juvenile Court. He concluded his 40+ years in criminal justice by becoming a probation district director for the Georgia Department of Corrections. In 1993, the State Board of Corrections renamed the DeKalb County Diversion Center to the J. E. (Jimmy) Helms Diversion Center in his honor.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James E. Helms, Sr. and Irene Grace Ray and sons Randy and Keith. He is survived by his wife Eddie of 65 years, son Jim and his wife Barbara, brother, Bob Helms and his wife Lois, grandchildren Sandy Spires and her husband Drew, Jenny Green and her husband Steve, Tiffany Faith and her husband Brian and Nate Helms, and 6 great-children, Savannah, Caroline, James, Ava, Parker and Cooper.
A memorial service is set for Saturday, June 25th, at 2:00 at A.S. Turner and Sons Chapel at 2773 North Decatur Road. The family will receive visitors at 1:00 prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Association.
