James S. Gouinlock Obituary GOUINLOCK, James Sturges (“Jim”), age 90, of Atlanta, GA passed away peacefully on March 18, 2024. Jim is survived by his four beloved children, Barbara Sturges Gouinlock, Elizabeth Mencken Gouinlock Yingling, Susan Strachan Gouinlock (and her husband James Bozza) and William Chalk Gouinlock (and his wife Melissa Gouinlock); and six beloved grandchildren. Jim adored his grandchildren, who are Jacob Yingling, Will Yingling, Connor Gouinlock, Erik Gouinlock, Freya Gouinlock and James Gouinlock Bozza. Jim was born in Warsaw, New York and grew up in the house his grandfather, a surgeon, had built for his family of nine children. Jim’s father was the youngest of the nine and Jim and his three siblings joined the family’s long legacy of valuing people, community, sports of all kinds, and education. Jim attended The Hill School, a private boarding school in Pottstown Pennsylvania, graduating in 1952. Jim loved life at Hill where he ran track and made dear friends with whom he stayed in touch throughout his life. After Hill, Jim attended Cornell University in Ithaca, NY. Jim joined the Chi Phi Fraternity and specialized in the pole vault on the Cornell track team. It was at Cornell that Jim fell in love with Philosophy. When he graduated Cornell in 1956, Jim attended the U.S. Naval Officer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island, graduating in 1957. Jim’s first tour of duty with the Navy was on a mine sweeper vessel out of Charleston, South Carolina. He loved Charleston and admired the southern culture and lifestyle that flourished there. It is in Charleston that Jim met the woman of his dreams, Barbara Crystal Mencken (“Chrys”), who was at that time an English major at the College of Charleston. They eventually married and had four children. Jim obtained his doctorate in Philosophy from Columbia University in 1969 and taught at SUNY Buffalo and DePauw University before accepting a tenure track position at Emory University in Atlanta in 1972. During his long tenure at Emory, Jim served as the Chair of the Emory Philosophy Department and as the Director of Graduate Studies in Philosophy. Jim’s three daughters all graduated from Emory. Jim published five (5) philosophical books and enjoyed speaking at lectureships and conferences. He stayed active in academic circles after his retirement from Emory. MEMORIAL SERVICE.
