James Harold Weeks

August 23, 1924 — November 5, 2009

Judge James H. Weeks

Judge James H. Weeks, known for his wit, fairness, and charm, died on November 5, 2009 at the age of 85. He is survived by his wife, Betty Williams-Weeks, her children Nancy and JP, her daughter-in-law Allison, and her granddaughter Piper.  He is also survived by his daughter and son-in-law Terry and Dick Ingwersen of Atlanta, his grandsons Wes Ingwersen and wife Laura, and Lance Ingwersen and Lauren Winkates.  He is also survived by his sister-in-law Lois Weeks, nephew Jim Weeks and Jim’s wife Linda, and niece Kathy Kelley, her husband Ted, and their family. He was born in Ensley, Alabama on Aug. 23, 1924.  When the Great Depression hit, his mother and father moved the family to a farm in Sulligent, AL.  He attended Sulligent HS, where he was captain of the basketball team, and graduated in 1942. He entered the Army Air Force in 1942 during WWII and was stationed in Alaska and Canada where he was promoted to Sergeant.  He was honorably discharged at Ft. McLelland on Jan. 30, 1946. He enrolled at Auburn University and graduated in 1948 with a Bachelor of Science degree.  He remained a loyal Auburn fan for the rest of his life. He married the former Peggy Jean Waldrop (who predeceased him in 1995), also from Sulligent, in September, 1947.  After living in Mississippi and Alabama for a number of years, they moved to Atlanta where he attended Emory Law School in the evenings while working in the insurance business during the day to support his wife and daughter.  He graduated from Emory with an LLB degree in 1961 and passed the Bar Exam in GA and AL. He practiced law in Atlanta and Decatur until 1982, when Governor Busby appointed him as Superior Court Judge for the Stone Mountain Circuit of DeKalb County.  He continued his judgeship until his retirement in 2001, at which time he took Senior Status through 2008.  His love for the law never waned. Judge Weeks enjoyed the game of golf, though intentionally didn’t always keep score.  His story-telling ability and recall of jokes was unparalleled.    He was exceptionally loving and generous to his grandsons, who deeply admired their “Big Daddy”, and he will be missed by all. A memorial service will be held at A.S. Turner & Sons in Decatur, Saturday, November 7, 2009 at 1:00PM.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Hospice Atlanta, 1244 Park Vista Drive, Atlanta, GA 30319 or to the charity of your choice.  A. S. Turner & Sons
