James Lee Holcomb, March 2, 1933 - November 5, 2024
James Lee (Jim) Holcomb passed away on November 5, 2024, at age 91, at his home in KingsBridge Retirement Community.
He was born on March 2, 1933, in Nelson, Georgia to Robert Lee Holcomb and Annie Lou Baker Holcomb. He is predeceased by his parents, his sister, Francis Louise Holland and his brother, Robert Holcomb. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Carolyn Yates Holcomb, his sons Michael Lee Holcomb, and Mark Elliott Holcomb, his grandchildren Jack Holcomb and Abby Holcomb, and his nephew Clay Holland.
Jim graduated from Russell High School in East Point, Georgia and received a bachelor's degree from Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta Georgia in Industrial Management. Jim loved his country, and one of his greatest honors was advancing to the rank of Captain in the U.S. Army. He later received a law degree from Atlanta Law School.
Jim retired from Chevron Oil Company, after serving as a Credit Manager for Gulf Oil Company for 27 years. He continued to serve his work community remaining active as President of the Gulf / Chevron Retiree's Association for 17 years.
Jim and Carolyn have been members of the Briarlake Baptist Church in Decatur for 55 years. Both were active members of the church, where Jim served as a deacon and served on various church committees. He was a long-time member of The Progressive Men's Sunday School Bible Class. He also taught both children and adults in Sunday School and was Director of the Royal Ambassadors youth group. He also influenced many young lives as a youth league coach in multiple sports over many years at Briarlake.
Jim was an avid tennis player. He played on several champion ALTA teams representing Briarlake. He also enjoyed league bowling while at Gulf Oil. A favorite pastime was fishing, often at a family retreat on Watts Bar Lake in Tennessee. James Holcomb loved and cared deeply for his family, making them his priority after his commitment to serving God. His absence will be felt throughout his community.
There will be a Celebration of Life Service at Kingsbridge on Saturday, November 16th, 2024, at 2 p.m.
A subsequent Memorial Service will be held at Briarlake Church on Sunday December 1st at 2:00 p.m.
