Mr. James Marion McCorkle, age 92,of Decatur, passed away Tuesday, August 21,2007. He was born in Fort Gaines, Georgia on February 9, 1915, the son of the late Francis Marion McCorkle and Annie Leila Hoover McCorkle. He is predeceased by his wife, Annis Westbrook McCorkle. He attended public school in Fort Gaines and graduated as valedictorian of his class in 1932. He was a graduate of Young Harris College and the University of Georgia, and later attended the Harvard Business School. Mr. McCorkle served his country in the United States Navy in the Pacific during World War II. After the war, Mr. McCorkle returned to Decatur where he joined Wheat Williams Realtors. In 1963, he obtained the designation of Certified Property Manager and held memberships in the Atlanta Real Estate Board, DeKalb Board of Realtors and the National Association of Realtors. He retired from Wheat Williams in 1990 and was awarded CPM emeritus membership by the National Chapter of the Institute of Real Estate Management. Mr. McCorkle joined the Lions Club in 1939 and served in many capacities including secretary and president and was active in the many charitable projects that the Lions Club sponsored over the years. For a number of years, he served on the Board of the Decatur Housing Authority and a member of the DeKalb County Grand Jurors Association. The First Baptist Church of Decatur was a cornerstone of his life where he served as a Deacon, committee member, chairman and an active member of the Alert Sunday School Class. To him, life was a gift from God. He lived his faith and devoted himself to building a strong family and to serving others. He is survived by his son, James Marion McCorkle, Jr. of Stone Mountain; daughter, Anne McCorkle Joyner and her husband Greg of Peachtree City; daughter, Jan McCorkle Espy and her husband Bob of Stone Mountain; six grandchildren; and three great grandchildren. The funeral will be held on Friday, August 24, 2007 at the Decatur First Baptist Church at 11 am. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the vestibule of the church. Burial will be in the Decatur Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, those desiring may make contributions to the Georgia Lighthouse Foundation, 1775 Clairmont Road, Decatur, Ga. 30033.A. S. Turner & Sons
