James "Mel" Melvin Brooks

James Melvin (Mel) Brooks, 72, of Atlanta, passed away suddenly at home on January 31, 2021. He was born April 23, 1948 at Crawford Long Hospital in Atlanta. Mel is survived by his wife, Nancy, son, Beau (Brittany) Brooks of Atlanta, along with numerous extended family and friends. Mel is pre-deceased by his parents, James Mell and Ruth Still Brooks, brother Nathan Brooks, and sister Freda Kennedy.
Mel graduated from Avondale High School In 1966, and attended Atlanta Baptist College. He went on to graduate from DeKalb Beauty College in 1970. Inspired by his creativity, Mel enjoyed a lifelong career as a hair stylist. Receiving numerous awards, he was recognized and respected as a leader in his field.
Mel’s humility and kindness was evident in his work and his life, yet he had an infectious enthusiasm and an uncanny sense of humor that brought joy and laughter to all. Mel’s gift for making everything more beautiful came through in all he did, from styling hair, to arranging flowers, to decorating…whether at home or for a party. “Let’s decorate!” was a familiar refrain in Mel’s life, and his Hallelujah energy always brought big smiles.
There was no greater love in Mel’s life than his wife of 35 years, Nancy Hayes Brooks, and the love and joy shared with their son, Beau Hayes Brooks, 32, of Atlanta. Mel’s love of family rippled out into a genuine love and connection to dear friends and colleagues across the generations. A man of strong faith, Mel was an elder at Shallowford Presbyterian Church, a place of grace and friendship for him and his family. Friends often say that Mel truly had a ministry of love and laughter, and he will be dearly missed by young and old.
A small family graveside service celebrating Mel’s life is planned for Monday, February 8 at 2 pm.
