SFC James Richard McGlon, Jr, U. S. Army (retired), of Decatur, died April 16, 2014. Born in LaFayette, Alabama, he joined the army after high school and served his country as a Green Beret until retirement in 1971. Sergeant First Class McGlon compiled an illustrious career with duty in Korea and Vietnam, where he received the Purple Heart and many other awards of distinction, including the Airborne insignia and Combat Infantryman's Badges After his military service, Mr. McGlon was employed for many years with the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and retired a second time. He was an avid reader and enjoyed the outdoors by hunting and fishing. Mr. McGlon is survived by his wife of 40 years, Anne Smith McGlon; daughters, Michelle Pruitt, Terri Rottler and Susan Jerriel; son, Jamie McGlon; step-daughters, Terry Carpenter and Carman Peters; 13 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; brothers, Earl McGlon, Joey McGlon and Eugene McGlon; several nieces and nephews. A graveside service, with full military honors, has been held for family only. A memorial service will be held 2 pm, Saturday, April 26, at Smoke Rise Baptist Church with Dr. Truett Gannon and Rev. Chris George officiating. For those desiring, memorial contributions may be made to Smoke Rise Baptist Church, 5901 Hugh Howell Rd, Stone Mountain GA 30087.
