Jane Gaines of Braselton Georgia passed away at her home on September 6, 2010.  A Georgia native, Jane, the daughter of Thomas and Lillus Tapp Miller, grew up in Atlanta and was a 1945 graduate of Atlanta Girls High. She was a member of the 1949 Centennial Graduating Class of Tift College in Forsyth, Georgia where she served as editor of the Annual, was selected to Who's Who in American Colleges, was a member of Alpha Psi Omega National Dramatic Fraternity, and was a Senior Superlative. After College Jane taught school in Columbus, Georgia where she met her husband of 47 years, Deane Gaines of Decatur. They were married in 1950 and after eight years of transfers due to Deane's military and business commitments, Jane and now family, 3 boys and a girl, returned to the Atlanta area for good. Once back in Atlanta, besides raising a family, Jane became an active member of the community. She was a Charter Member of Briarcliff Baptist Church and served in such capacities as Church Hostess, Wedding Director, and Director of the Conversational English Class for Internationals. Her first love at the church was teaching the BYKOTA (Be Ye Kind One To Another) Sunday School Class for over 40 years. Besides the church, Jane was active in the Georgia Federation of Women's Clubs and with the civic projects they supported. She held numerous positions with the State Organization and the Fourth District where she served as President from 1984 to 1985. Jane was a member of the Board of Trustees for the Tallulah Falls School. As Deane was a Georgia Tech Alumnus and Football Letterman, Jane developed an intense loyalty to the athletic program and religiously attended football and basketball games from the late 1950's until her illness in 2009 - Go Jackets. Jane was preceded in death by her husband Deane. She is survived by sons, Dale and spouse Louise, Mark and spouse Blayne, Jack and spouse Dana, daughter Deana and spouse Charles Motes, Grandchildren: Audra and Madalyn Motes, Ryan and Mackenzie Gaines, Step-daughters Jeanette Leathers, Katherine Niese, four great grand children, and her brother Robert Miller and spouse Barbara. Funeral services will be held at 11 A. M. Friday, September 10th at Briarcliff Baptist Church with Dr. Bill Bigger officiating. Burial will follow in Arlington Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Eagle Ranch, P.O. Box 7200, 5500 Union Church Road, Chestnut Mountain, Georgia 30502 770-967-8500. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Thursday, September 9th, at A. S. Turner & Sons.
