Jane Fisher Galphin died on Saturday, February 19, 2011 at the age of 99.
She was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on June 26, 1911, one of six children of Harry Leighton and Lidie Sproul Fisher.After graduating from secretarial school, Jane Fisher worked as a secretary for a Vice President of the West Penn Power Company for a short time before the Depression caused positions to be cut at the power company including hers.On August 1, 1932, she married Robert L Galphin, Sr. at her family's home in Pittsburgh. They were devoted to each other for 72 years. Robert preceded her in death in 2005. She lived in Pittsburgh, PA, Birmingham, AL and for the last 63 years in Atlanta, GA.She did not work again until 1950 when she went to work at the Dekalb County School System. She began working as a temporary position but within a few months she was the administrative assistant to Jim Cherry, the Superintendent of Dekalb Schools. She held this position for 20 years. Her organizational skills, high standards and ability to handle difficult situations made her a major asset to the school system.She was devoted to her family and friends, her Christian beliefs and her church. She was instrumental in the founding of the Mountain Brook Baptist Church in Birmingham, AL and a charter member of the Briarcliff Baptist Church in Atlanta, GA. She enjoyed traveling, especially with friends. They went to Europe, the British Isles, Asia, Alaska and the Caribbean.Jane Galphin is survived by her son, Dr. Robert L. Galphin and his wife Linda of Blythewood, SC, her daughter Beverly Clyde and her husband David of Atlanta, GA, eight grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and 1 great, great grandchild.A service celebrating the life of Jane Galphin will be held at Briarcliff Baptist Church on Saturday, February 26th at 11:00 am with interment immediately following at Floral Hills Cemetery. The family will greet friends beginning at 10:00 before the service on Saturday.In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Briarcliff Baptist Church, 3039 Briarcliff Rd., NE, Atlanta, GA 30329 or Toco Hills Community Alliance, 1790 LaVista Rd., Atlanta, GA 30329.
