Jane Prather Segraves of Atlanta passed away Sunday, December 14, 2008, after recently celebrating her 97th birthday. A Georgia native, she was an enthusiastic traveler who visited several European countries and every state in the U.S. except North Dakota. Born in Atlanta on November 28, 1911 to Joseph Christian Prather and Annie Richard Bostwick, Jane grew up in LaGrange and attended LaGrange High School. She attended Teachers College in Athens for one year, before transferring to LaGrange College during the Depression. She graduated in 1933 and became a country school teacher at Rosemont School. She later went to work for Hartford Accident Insurance Company in Atlanta. Jane married Julian Pyron Segraves on January 15, 1942 and enjoyed 42 years of marriage before his death in 1984. A beloved first grade teacher at W. D. Thompson Elementary School in DeKalb County, Mrs. Segraves taught there for 23 years. She was a vital member of Peachtree Baptist Church for more than 50 years, where she was an active and energetic member of the Young at Hearts Club. Jane was also a member of the LaGrange College Alumni Association and the LaVista Woman’s Club and president of both associations. She is survived by her sons, Ed, Jim and Joe Segraves and their families, including seven grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Her sweet nature, zest for life, and concern for others will make her greatly missed by all who were lucky enough to know her.
