Jane Webster, age 71 of Decatur, passed away March 17, 2020. She was born October 17, 1948, in Louisville, KY. She was a loving wife, mother, and dedicated teacher who will be greatly missed. Mrs. Webster was a Spanish teacher at Woodward Academy for 23 years. She also taught at Avondale, Henderson, and Tucker High Schools in the DeKalb system prior to that.
Jane was preceded in death by her mother, Margaret Hartman Sooy, and her father, Floyd Albert Sooy.
She is survived by Clayton Webster, her husband of 45 years, by her son John Rawlings Webster of Atlanta, daughter Katherine Anne Webster (Justin Hicks) of Denver, and by her brother William H. Sooy (Kathleen) of Richmond.
Jane grew up in a military family and lived around the world as a child. She was a graduate of Florida Presbyterian College (now Eckerd), and earned her Master’s degree at Georgia State University. At Woodward her love of travel continued as she helped lead students around the globe on educational trips to Spanish speaking countries.
Her understanding of faith was very important to her. The universe is a miracle, God created this world. Jane was baptized at Oak Grove UMC when her son John was baptized. She was so happy to have found Oak Grove, a place to be our church home. She was a Children’s Sunday School teacher, a member of the Altar Guild, an active member of the Turban Ministry, an Adult Sunday School teacher, and President of the Renn Sunday School Class. Additionally, she was a Crew Chief at the famous Annual Oak Grove Barbecue.
She led a very active life as a member of a bridge group, a book club, a Red Hat group, and the Beta Kappa Sorority. She loved our annual family vacations in the Great Smoky Mountain National Park.
