Jean Snowden Turner

JEAN SNOWDEN TURNER of Decatur passed away on March 4, 2012 surrounded by her children. She was 91 years old. Jean was born in Washington, D. C. on December 13, 1920. She was the daughter of Grady W. Snowden and Anita Starling Snowden. She was a long-time member of Oak Grove United Methodist Church. She was married to her beloved husband Russell G. Turner, Jr. for 58 years when he predeceased her in 2001. Jean was a caring and devoted wife and mother. She had four children: 3 sons and 1 daughter. She leaves behind two sons, Russell G. Turner, III, Marietta; Chris S. Turner, Braselton; and a daughter Nancy Turner Hughes, Decatur. The youngest child and son, Richard W. Turner, predeceased in the year 1983. She also leaves behind 5 grandchildren: Shannon Collins, Richard Manus, Michael Manus, Laura Greathouse and Christopher Turner; one great-grandchild, Aiden Collins; a daughter-in-law, Ann Turner, and son-in-law, Bill Hughes. She also leaves behind a brother and sister-­in-law, Jack and Frances Turner, and several nieces and nephews. Her sister, Helen McDonald, predeceased in 2009. She graduated from Girls High in Atlanta in 1939 and was voted "Most Attractive." She loved her family and community dearly. She helped form the Leafmore-Creek Park Garden Club and served as president for several terms. She and her husband, Russell, worked tirelessly in helping form the Leafmore-Creek Park Pool and Clubhouse. Her hobbies were decorating, where she so many times was awarded "blue ribbon" for her doors at Christmas. She loved to collect dolls, jewelry and beautiful dresses. So many times people often said she looked like Elizabeth Taylor. She was also known as "Momma Jean" to her grandchildren and to others who knew and loved her as well. Funeral services will be held at the chapel of A. S. Turner & Sons at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, March 8 with Rev. Jennifer Hornbuckle officiating and Internment at Arlington Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to Crossroads Hospice of Atlanta or Montclair Assisted Living at Clairmont Place, Decatur, GA. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. at A. S. Turner & Sons Funeral Home and Crematory.
