Mr. Jerry Edmond Pounds, 75, of Stone Mountain passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 15, 2011 due to an extended illness. A native of Dekalb County, Jerry was the only child of Edmond W. and Lucile Hill Pounds. He attended Avondale High School where he was a proud member of the class of '55. He enjoyed working on the reunion committee and maintained friendships with many of his classmates throughout his life. He joined the Air National Guard upon graduation and attended West Georgia College and Georgia State College where he developed an interest in Vocational Education. After having worked for several years in the family auto repair business, he moved into teaching at the Atlanta Area Technical School where he was a department chairman. He transferred to the Federal Bureau of Prisons system and spent the rest of his teaching career with the Federal Penitentiary in Atlanta and later with The Federal Correctional Institution in Tallahassee, Florida. He retired in 1993. Returning to Dekalb County, he enjoyed his leisure years managing the family rental properties. Jerry was an avid runner and in earlier years ran the Peachtree Road Race many times and competed in the New York Marathon before an accident forced him to discontinue this hobby. He enjoyed travel and visited many parts of the world including visiting the pyramids in Egypt, a lifelong dream. Reading history and biographies was also of great interest to him and he especially admired President Abraham Lincoln and Winston Churchill. His greatest pleasure, however, was spending time with his little granddaughters, his "Roses". Jerry is survived by his wife of 52 years, Paula Johnston Pounds, son Christopher Pounds, daughter Kathleen P. and her husband David Lauterbach, granddaughters, Victoria Rose and Abigail Rose Lauterbach. Other survivors include several cousins, sisters-in-law Patricia Alexander and Jeannine Goetz, three nieces and a nephew. Jerry was a gentleman, generous and compassionate toward others and a true delight with his wonderful dry wit. Jerry was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church here and in Tallahassee, Florida. We are all greatly saddened by the loss of this fine man but feel thankful to have had him in our lives. It is with a deep sense of grief but with an abiding love that we send Jerry on his way. For those wishing to honor his memory, please send contributions to The United Methodist Children's Home 500 South Columbia Drive Decatur, Georgia 30030-4112. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, December 18, 2011 at 3:00 PM in the chapel of A.S. Turner and Sons with Rev. Paul O. Ard officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. A.S. Turner and Sons, Decatur.
