Dr. Jessica Kazimiera Karoliszyn Hunt passed away peacefully on September 1, 2021. A daughter of the late Ignacy and Kunegunda Karoliszyn, Dr. Hunt was born in what is currently Ukraine. She survived World War II in Germany and immigrated to the United States in 1950. Throughout her life she continued to express her appreciation and gratitude for the privilege of building her future in America. She earned a BA degree from Case Western Reserve University and an MA and PhD degrees from Emory University. She was devoted to her family, teaching mathematics, and was the recipient of many teaching awards: She was chosen as a Star Teacher 13 times; Outstanding Teacher of the Year twice; recipient of the 2001 Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics by the GA Council of Teaching Mathematics; the recipient of the 2001 National Presidential Scholars Program Teacher Recognition Award from the U.S. Department of Education; and for the years 2000 and 2007, she was awarded the Edyth May Sliffe Award for distinguished teaching of mathematics presented by the Mathematical Association of America.
In addition to her love for her family and teaching, she pursued a life-long quest for knowledge and beauty that took her on a long rewarding journey of learning and savoring the results. She was fluent in five languages. She studied and enjoyed operas, vocal and instrumental recitals, and symphonic performances. Cherished by her loving family she departed our beautiful earth with reverberations from Gustav Mahler’s, Das Lied Von Der Erde, (The Song of the Earth).
She is survived by her beloved husband, Dr. Dale E. Hunt, whom she married on June 20, 1959, one daughter, Maia Karlsen of Marietta, GA, one son, Stanley Hunt of Green Cove Springs, FL, two brothers, two sisters, and seven grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a beloved son, Rommel E. Hunt, and two brothers, Eugene and John Karoliszyn.
Family members are observing Dr. Hunt’s personal requests associated with her death.
