Joanne Elizabeth Baker Ricks, 86, died Monday at her residence after a long illness. Mrs. Ricks was born in Atlanta in 1928. She was the daughter of Joel Thurston and Bessie Baker.
She attended Girls High School in Atlanta, Brenau Academy in Gainesville and the University of Georgia in Athens. While a student at the University of Georgia, she was a member of the AOπ sorority. At UGA, she met her husband, Lonnie Wade Ricks. He pre-deceased here in 1971.
During her adult life, Mrs. Ricks lived in Los Angeles, New Orleans, and Montgomery, Alabama. She and her family returned to Atlanta in 1967, buying a home in the Stone Mountain area, where she lived until 2013 when she moved to Atria Tucker, a senior living community. She was a life-long fan of Mary Mac's, The Swan House, the Atlanta Braves and Georgia Bulldogs.
She is survived by her son Wade Stevens Ricks and his wife, Janet Kolodzy of Waltham, Massachusetts, her daughter Ruth Hanna of Stone Mountain, Georgia and her grandson Kurt Hanna of Duluth, Georgia.
The family will receive visitors at A.S. Turner Funeral Home Wednesday night from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.
A graveside service will be held at Westview Cemetery in Atlanta at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 6.
