Following declining health for several years, Joe Travis Dye, age 82, passed peacefully from natural causes on Friday, November 21, 2008, in Atlanta, GA. A long time Atlanta resident, Mr. Dye was born in Elberton, GA, in 1925. He served honorably in the Pacific with the U. S. Navy during World War II, and graduated from the University of Georgia in 1950. He began his business career with the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers and The Atlanta Journal Magazine, before beginning his life long occupation as an artist. In addition to his talents as an artist, he enjoyed woodworking and archery, for which he was Georgia State Champion for several years during the early 1960’s. He also had a very inventive nature and developed and marketed several products to assist archery enthusiasts. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. Obe D. Dye, Sr., and Mrs. Emma W. Dye of Elberton, GA; and his brother and sister, Mr. Obe D. Dye, Jr., of Gainesville, GA; and Mrs. Dorothy D. Gaines of Elberton, GA. He is survived by his devoted wife of over 50 years, Mrs. Mary Alice Miller Dye; two sons, Travis M. Dye along with his wife, Dianne M. Dye of Cumming, GA, and Kenneth B. Dye of Marietta, GA; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Sunday, November 23rd at 3:00 P.M. in the chapel of A. S. Turner & Sons with Rev. Larry T. Burgess officiating.
